 benötigt an seinem Standort in der Seestraße in Berlin neue Laborflächen. Insgesamt sollen 88 Labore einschließlich notwendiger Auswerteräume, Lager, Büros, Seminarräume und gemeinsame Funktionsräume in „Haus 7“ Platz finden.  . In einem einphasigen, nicht-öffentlichen Wettbewerb konnten wir das Preisgericht mit unserem Entwurf überzeugen.

Der Neubau wird die beiden bestehenden Gebäude - Haus 5 und Haus 6 - überragen und vom Hof aus gesehen zentral in deren Mitte stehen. Durch die kompakte Form mit einem quadratischen Grundriss kann der Abstand zu diesen beiden Nachbargebäuden optimiert und die natürliche Belichtung für alle Forschungsräume weiterhin garantiert werden.

Der Haupteingang des neuen Hauses 7 orientiert sich klar zu dem zentralen Freiraum hin, mit einem gedeckten, arkadenförmigen Vorbereich. Dieser ermöglicht für die Mitarbeitenden eine witterungsgeschützte Nutzung und eine großzügige Öffnung der Foyer-, Seminar- und Kommunikationszone zum zentralen Garten hin. Durch den kompakten Footprint wird ein möglichst großer Teil des wertvollen Freiraumes erhalten.

Wir haben bei unserem Entwurf zwei thematische Schwerpunkte gesetzt: Einerseits sollte ein Gebäude errichtet werden, das größtmögliche Flexibilität erlaubt, denn Laborgebäude müssen sich den laufend wechselnden Erfordernissen anpassen können. Der zweite Schwerpunkt im architektonischen Konzept liegt in der Behandlung und Qualität der kommunikativen Bereiche, denn Kommunikation spielt in der Wissenschaft und Forschung eine zentrale Rolle.

Das „Haus 7“ wird als Holzhybridbau realisiert. Ein räumliches Stahlbetongitter schafft die primäre Tragstruktur. Somit kann der Betonanteil auf ein Minimum reduziert werden- bei gleichzeitig höchster Flexibilität in Bezug auf Umnutzungsmöglichkeiten.

Das Preisgericht urteilte abschließend: „Insgesamt stellt die Arbeit eine in Funktionalität, Gestaltung und Qualität der Aufenthaltsräume sehr überzeugende Lösung dar. Struktur und Gestaltung bilden eine wohltuende und konsequente Einheit, die einem modernen Laborgebäude gerecht wird."

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) requires new laboratory spaces at its Seestraße site in Berlin. A total of 88 laboratories, including essential analysis rooms, storage areas, offices, seminar rooms, and shared functional spaces, are to be accommodated in “House 7”.

In a single-phase, non-public competition, we were able to convince the jury with our design.

The new building will rise above the two existing structures – House 5 and House 6 – and will be centrally located between them when viewed from the courtyard. Thanks to its compact shape with a square footprint, the distance to the neighboring buildings can be optimized while still ensuring ample natural daylight for all research areas.

The main entrance of the new House 7 clearly faces the central open space and features a covered, arcade-like forecourt. This provides sheltered outdoor use for employees and allows for a generous connection between the foyer, seminar, and communication zones and the central garden. The compact footprint also helps preserve as much of the valuable open space as possible.

Our design focused on two key thematic priorities: First, the building was to offer the highest possible degree of flexibility, as laboratory buildings must adapt to ever-changing requirements. The second focus of the architectural concept lies in the treatment and quality of the communicative areas, as communication plays a central role in science and research.

"House 7" will be built as a timber-hybrid structure. A spatial concrete grid forms the primary supporting framework, allowing the amount of concrete used to be minimized — while still ensuring the highest degree of flexibility for future repurposing.

The jury concluded:
"Overall, the design presents a highly convincing solution in terms of functionality, design, and the quality of communal spaces. The structure and aesthetics form a harmonious and coherent whole, befitting a modern laboratory building."
